Case Competitions in the Classroom
Case Competitions are a great way to get students to apply the course theory and put it into action! They also reinforce decision making skills and foster critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity skills. Kyle Prevost (Birtle Collegiate) and co-founder of www.youngandthrifty.ca ran the first Manitoba High School Case Competition last May in Brandon, Manitoba. If you are interested in finding out more about this type of event, please contact Kyle directly. Whether you plan on competing or not, cases are a great way to develop critical decision making skills and introduce key financial concepts and principles.
You can find case competitions to use in your classrooms here:
Complimentary Cases for Secondary Business Classrooms
Ivey Publishing (for purchase and may need to be adapted)
Kyle has also been working on another project this summer. In September, he hosted the Canadian Financial Summit which featured over 25 Canadian personal finance experts being interviewed on various topics. You can purchase an all access classroom pass to these interviews and pick and choose the interviews that best fit your current unit of study. This product would be a great learning resource for both the Personal Finance and Economic Principles courses.
